I didn't have any shirts for valentines for the girl. I did have two brown shirts that were exactly the same, a heart shirt with lots of stains, and pink felt that matched; sans stains. I can't say I came up with the concept myself because that would be unlike me. I saw someone attach really cute valentine socks to a little dress to make sleeves, and one giant felt heart . I didn't have cute new v-day socks but She did have a heart-y shirt. I hacked up the heart one and made two rectangles, then sewed those rectangles to sleeves using the bottom hem of the shirt at the end of the sleeve, convenient, then attached them to the brown one. I cut out the felt and didn't like it plain so added more of the heart t-shirt under it. Liked it much better. I ironed on some fusing to the back just in case then sewed the hearts on. I like it, and it looked so cute on her. I also like it didn't cost me anything extra and total it was only $3.25 to begin with, months ago.

it's already out of style.

I know, everyone has already moved on to yarn, burlap or felt wreathes. But I decided to make a book page one for my guest room. I really like how it turned out. I also made a cone one for my room, I'll spare you because I don't really like it.

wooden crate

Thanks to Ana, over at ana-white.com {seriously love it there}, I made my own old looking crate out of old fence posts, some new 1x12 and I don't have a router so I bought some cheap handles. I'm so proud of myself. I even used the tarnished old wood screws that were in the fence railing. I don't love the look of old gray fence and shiny new pine together so I added a little walnut stain with an almost dry brush then rubbed it off to get a more similar looking wood. I made it to house shoes by the door as the fall/winter tracks in dried leaves and other weathery things. And I'm sick of looking for the kids shoes that they didn't put away. Thanks Ana!!

I used this tutorial for my dvd holder for the kids movies and then I looked at organizers on line and just winged the rest of it. I don't have peltex or whatever she used for the cd holder. I used a cereal box for sturdiness and glue sticked the fabric on then stitched the edges so it would stay. By the time it's all sewn together, it isn't moving. I used the rest of the instructions except I added it to my organizer not my visor.

I'm not sure if you know my love of wreathes. I'm trying to make one for every season. Haven't got anything springy yet, but just give it time. I will. I have made these or bought and added to them all.

updates on the guest room

This is more on the guest room in progress. I made the headboard out of an old door that floor lamp was previously painted purple but I wasn't a fan so now it is off white and glazed the bench is two big chunky side tables from a yard sale the tufted seat is made from an old sheet the kids ripped a hole in and old egg crate foam. The buttons aren't so much buttons as the are fabric covered chip board circles hot glued to where I tufted.. Nice. It isn't perfect but this is my fave project as a whole.

This lamp shade has had a makeover also I found a little project to copy here.

An old sewing pattern, mod podge and then a little ribbon hot glued to the edges. I like it. I left the original lining on so it wouldn't be totally sheer.

I'm still around, i went to Arizona for a while then we had Halloween and I've been feeling blog challenged lately. I hardly even check others blogs. sad day. I'm still crafting just give me a few hours and I'll post some pictures up. Hopefully I'm back.

more possible for me. another friend wanted to do a religious

worded one in her house and so that is what came to mind when

i found this. i will be making a real one soon enough. i think

Ok I found this tutorial, then an old sheet at the thrift store for two dollars and voila! I had enough to make one for me and little sis. Mine isn't finished yet. I had the ribbon that matched for hers. yeah! She loves it. And so do I. I've also read that you can use circle table cloths, just keeping my eye out for a wearable one. The pics are terrible, they are from my phone.

this is my girls dresser. it is perfect that she can reach her dresses but it so boxy and kind of looks like a filing cabinet attached to a small closet. I can't change the boxy so I added the flower hooks for whimsy and today I used more scrap paper and mod podge. love the stuff. seriously.

Isn't it so much better? {{Excusing the drying warpy paper}} I think it is so much more fun. And little sis loves it!!

organizing pretty

You know those ugly translucent brown wall file holders. Seen in offices everywhere. Good for holding mail and files and other such things. While they are useful, they don't have to be an eyesore. I primed and painted and glued and now have an attractive place for bills and receipts and other such things. I also took a frame with broken glass (tossed that) and covered up some foam core poster board and pushed in the hooks, added a little hot glue to the back of those for stability and then rubbed on "keys" to the frame. I hung the frame with peal and stick foam adhesive.

I've been working on our guest room. A lot over the last few months. I showed you the dresser and that was just the beginning of it all. Here are a few little things. The square art work I saw on remodelaholic. Super simple, cut one to two inch squares of scrapbook paper and mod podge (on wood or cardboard or like me poster board) from the outside in. I put ribbon around the edge for a more finished look and it hides uneven placement. Then I took left over paper and a couple of rub-ons to make the sign. The heart is from a simply handmade idea for valentines. I just altered it. I also made the shelf with a couple pieces of scrap wood. It is hideous so I stapled fabric on to it. I don't love it but eh, I made it. Then I decorated an inexpensive unfinished wood tray (hobby lobby) with more leftover paper from the squares, originally it was for a catch all on the dresser but it fits so nicely in the bathroom with the candle; which is wrapped in paper and stapled on.

I love me some before and afters. I love to find cheap, ugly things and make them suit my needs. I needed a way to display the boy's kindergarten artwork. While at hobby lobby I found cheap ugly pictures in the 80-90% off aisle. Ok they aren't terrible they just don't go in my house, I can imagine a few places where they wouldn't be ugly at all. Anyway with a little mod podge you can change just about anything. So now I have a darling owl in a rustic looking frame. Which fits into my boys woodsy room.

guest room dresser

It's been a while since this was finished. But, I'm behind on life, so my blog follows suit. I took the advice from allthingsthrifty.com from their glazing 101. Except I made my own glaze with one part dark brown paint, four parts water. This furniture was my great grandmothers and has been sitting in my basement guest room not very loved. And it was showing it's wear and years of previous love. I thought about painting it for a few years. really. And finally did it. I primed it, got a quart of off white oops paint for a dollar, painted, and then glazed. I love it now! It has a similar looking sister too that has yet to be painted!

Below is the dress i made for my girl out of a lace curtain panel, like the one on the side of the pic. for some reason I remembered a bow on the dress but I guess I was wrong. i think it looks really cute on her.

lamps and lettering

A two dollar lamp from a yard sale got some glossy purple paint. ( i may actually like it better in the white primer, hm) And that is my short hair in all it's windswept glory. the lamp with a 3 dollar shade from goodwill, it's not complete yet. I've also been putting up some vinyl lettering. (sorry pic is really dark) I put the clock up a while ago, but it seemed so big and empty. I think the lettering was just what it needed.

Oh this is so much better. It looks nicer hung up in my dining room too. Just a little metallic rustoleum, no primer needed. One word of advice, if you get a phone call in the middle of painting put the phone away, don't leave it in the painting area.

I know we've all seen that title before. This is what I made for my little girls friend. I was trying to make something on the cheap and I had all this on hand. I even made the wand with scrap fabric and a cake dowel. (and now even the boy is asking for one) This is the first tutuorial I found from mombabe but I've seen plenty. I did this one with ribbon instead of elastic, you just tie a knot where you want to start and stop. This is one of the best gifts I've found for little girls.

ok, if you didn't catch the sleeping beauty quote, get yourself a daughter (you can borrow mine) and watch it. this is what i have been up to.

dollar store print, mod podge, paper, stencil, picture and acrylic paint, thats what it took for this cute bathroom deco. i made one for all the kids. (modest ones) i have also used this stencil a couple other places in the house, i love it, i;m trying to figure out out to get a large one on my wall in my LR.

Don't judge me, my bed isn't made. I was to busy making a headboard out of a door. (it was an extra door that didn't go to anything, not the one in the pic, random) I say look up some tutorials online and don't use a door. use some thin plywood, i was trying to make this as cheap as possible and it cost me just over 20 bucks for all the supplies, but i didn't use all of them and have lots of fabric left over for more pillows.

I made an easter dress for my little girl. I also made a skirt following this tutorial from the same lavender fabric for me. My friend gave me yards and yards of this stuff, i still have more, oh what to do, what to do!

And last I'd like to welcome you in. It's not perfect, but it keeps getting better, with everyone else's awesome ideas.

rustic soap jar

I saw a cute jar at my friends house for hand soap and thought, I can make that. So I did. My skills were rudimentary at best and if I did it again I would know what to do differently. I used a large drill bit and a large nail and hammer to make my whole on top and pliers. Today I found out I wasn't alone in thinking I can make that. I found this tutorial online that makes it simpler. I am totally satisfied with it. Maybe I'd be even more satisfied if I painted the lid.

I took one or a few of my kids books (I know most of you have these), and re-purposed it. There isn't a full set of any of these because my kids tore most of them apart throughout the years. Chipboard can be expensive. I just covered it with scrap paper and now it is the beginnings of a little i love you because book or brag book. you can all do this! it takes :
little books
sand paper
glue ( i really used white paper glue)
scrap paper
other embellishments. (buttons, glitter, leaves, whatever you have or want)
oh there is one trick, you have to sand off the pages to remove the shine or the glue won't stick

ok funds are low on the decorating front but i still want to make my home lovely and mine. so i dream. i see furniture and think what i could do with it, i see wall art and think i could make that for cheaper but don't always have the know how. i get online and search decorating sites and i think i just found the one that i truly love the most so far. It has some serious competition. So many people do amazing things and i have some seriously talented friends but this site is strictly dedicated to decorating your home on the CHEAP. If you haven't already heard of it, let me enlighten you. http://www.allthingsthrifty.com/ . Seriously I'm in heaven. And they also have links to more heavenly inspirations on their site. It's just too good.

OK secondly I will be doing a hair bow giveaway soon. I see these priced all over the place and when you see them I want you to tell me what you would pay for them. (but I will be giving these first ones away) I just have to figure out how to dry out/ bake the hand made buttons because there are no directions on the box of clay. The last ones liquefied.

celebrating literacy

The boy celebrated literacy in school and had to dress up as his favorite story book character and take the book to school. He decdided on Nate The Great. I had a clearance sheet I bought that didn't match any of the other ones, so close but two different of shades tan. Well it was super cheap so I kept it around and I'm so glad I did. I took the sheet and shirt pattern and came up with the trench. I took a sun hat pattern and modified the brim to have the detective hat. I love the hat, it is my favorite part. He said all his teachers loved it. That's what I love to hear.

Quilting runs in the family. I don't have that gene. My mom quilts everything by hand and it shows in the details, she's amazing. My mother in law quilts by machine and is very talented. I grabbed some photos of her (MIL) latest project. Can I just say WOW! It all comes from the fabric in the middle.

I bought chip board letters and covered them in fun paper. Then I used soda can tabs to hang them, recycling pays off.

First you cut out your heart, I wanted my kids touch so i had them scribble all over paper then cut out hearts.

Then I embossed the hearts for a little more detail with hearts flowers, stripes, whatever I could use, then i inked the edges.

Matte heart onto valentine paper and trim with decorative edge scissors. then add simple letters, you can print them out , stamp or just use your own skills. decorate with ribbons, craft foam hearts, or whatever you have.

Matte it all on black cardstock and cut out. Put brads in each corner and tie all letters together with coordinating ribbons or string. You can hang it on a mantle, across a window or doorway. anywhere it will beautify your home. Any colors or any other phrase would work, kiss me, valentine, you can do this for all holidays, different shapes, I might try Easter eggs next. Who knows?
